Reynolds weaves a beautiful and funny tale around a disgusting habit. The writing is tight and poetic, the joy and bliss so palpable you can't help but feel the narrator's pleasure, even if you have no interest in smoking yourself.
A fun little short story. The narrator is totally self-absorbed by his act of smoking a cigarette. It actually reminded me of a pot-head telling a story while high. Weird.
An absurdist dead end. Beautifully written, it nonetheless celebrates a real life killer habit. This puts me in a tight spot — the writing is superb, the subject is not. The best I can come up with is halfway between the highest and lowest ratings, so it gets three out of five.
